Review: Western Digital Passport Portable Hard Disk
Everyone needs a place to store their precious photo's of their kids (or cars hehe), space for video clips, downloads, or your work presentations. Overview: I've had handfuls of external hard drives over the years. I'm currently using a couple of 3.5" external drives with eSata on my Macbook Pro at home for video editing (scratch disk). They aren't very portable. You see, external 3.5" drives provide you with loads of storage space, but with them comes the requirement for A/C power. Not much use when your traveling. Enter the 2.5" external drives, particularly the Western Digital Passport drives.
Sleek black case with glossy finish and little rubber feet so it doesn't slide around on the surface your using it on. Easy access USB port, included USB cable, plug it in and go. Packaging: The WD Passport drives come in a pretty cool package, easy to open. You don't actually need a chain saw to get the packaging open like a lot of other products these days, nice job. It includes the basic fold out quick start guide and USB cable too. The drive inside is a 5400rpm 400GB drive. You can also obtain these in 250, 320 and 500GB capacities. This one is the WDME4000 model. Specifications: Get the low down at the WD web site Performance: Lets face it, the performance of any USB disk drive isn't going to blow your mind. USB sucks compared to firewire or eSata. The goal here is to have cheap and portable storage. If you want performance, look elsewhere! Plus I can't be bothered loading up some test software to thrash this drive. Maybe later? Conclusion: Very nice, sleek, light, small, convenient. What more can I say. Sure you can buy some other caddy and slap a drive in it, but will it match the WD drive for price? Unlikely. These WD drives are amazingly well priced. This 400GB model sold for $155 AUD.
