If you don't know what a widget is, your a goon. Open your dashboard by hitting F12 (or F4 on newer mac's) if that doesn't work, panic! Get yourself the iSlayer istat pro widget Now, it monitors network interfaces, pretty wild eh? When you connect your iPhone by USB or Bluetooth, you should see it as an interface in istat... keep your eyes on that data if your monitoring your usage. OR use your providers usage page, OR, check out iiQuota on the appstore (supports most of the big name carriers) Enjoy!
So I've been tethering my iPhone to my new Macbook Pro 13" since I purchased the laptop. I figured now was a good time to write about it. I've been doing it for a few weeks now. Here are my findings. Background info: Equipment: iPhone 3G, Optus, 500MB data included a month. Macbook Pro 13" 2.53Ghz. Used: mainly on the train to and from work in Perth CBD at speeds up to 130kph The iPhone 3.0 OS allows tethering, some mobile carriers allow tethering out of the box, others do not. Optus for example do not allow tethering, however there are ways around this without even 'hacking' your phone. (You basically need to change the APN on the phone using a mobileconfig file.) Some web sites make this really easy for you. Be warned that this technique may be shit-canned in OS 3.1. A Shame because Optus charge $9.95 a month to "activate" tethering.
A few weeks ago Melissa and I purchased a new Macbook from her uni.. a 2.4Ghz Unibody Macbook. It's nice, and it's fast, and it's quicker than her old 1.8Ghz Macbook Pro.
2 weeks later, Apple released new Macbook's again and pulled the Macbook 13" unibody into the "Pro" line.
The update isn't really worth getting upset about, it's nice to know Apple are updating their products regularly.
I'm now using Melissa's Macbook Pro to replace the old G4 Mac Mini I was using, until I decide to buy a brand new Mac. I guess I'll at least wait for Snow Leopard to be released!
Latest purchase. Story is, I upgraded the hard disk in the Macbook Pro (80GB) to a new Seagate Mentus 7200rpm 320GB drive. It's much faster. The old 80GB drive went into this enclosure to use as a 'backup' until the system is all sorted.. It's a SATA enclosure, it has a usb interface, it's dead easy to open (screwless) and install the hard disk, it's literally a 30 second excersize. It cost me approx $25 AUD, I give it the thumbs up. See gallery below, including XBench test. [gallery orderby="post_name"]
Last year I sold my Macbook Pro, in anticipation of new models. The new models came... I still haven't replaced my old MBP. Why? Well I wanted the new Macbook, only, it doesn't come with firewire, I need firewire for my Canon HV30 video camera. FAIL Apple. So I was looking at a new Macbook Pro. That got me thinking, why not go for the 17" MBP, the new unibody boasts excellent battery life, and it also has the FullHD resolution display (as per the previous model). The only problem is, it's a $6,000 machine here in Australia. Can I justify the expense? yes.... when I'm more cashed up. In the meantime, can you believe I've been using an old G4 PPC Mac Mini? I'm talking 1.42Ghz, 1GB ram, 80GB hdd. It's so old! but you know what, I've got leopard on it and it's working fine. Well, fine for E-mail, web, and some basic tasks anyway! It's amazing how these old machines can still be put to use, especially if it's for basic tasks. I sure do miss the power to be able to edit and encode HD video's! I'll probably be buying a new Macbook Pro in a week or so, if things go as planned.
My Macbook Pro is over two years old now, it's a 2Ghz core duo, revision A, as in... the first Macbook made available by Apple! Sometime down the track Apple did a battery recall, I had a new battery sent to me to replace the existing one. How nice. Some 184 cycles later and the battery only lasts about 40 mins. I asked my local Apple service centre if I could get a replacement, thinking my chances would be slim. How wrong was I! Here I am, with a fresh, brand new, Macbook Pro battery! This goes nicely with the new pack I bought off ebay (also brand new) for around $70 AUD. Score, two really fresh batteries :) Just need to take care of the little guys now! hehe. If you have a Rev A Macbook Pro, you might be able to get yourself a new battery (if yours is on it's way out)... you should at least try!

I phoned up DigiLife yesterday (apple reseller) to enquire about bringing in my macbook pro for a service. It has a squeeky spacebar and it's driving me up the wall. (sounds like nothing, but trust me it's so damn annoying) They said the turnaround time is about 7 days. 7 DAYS WITHOUT MY MACBOOK PRO. This is my life, my work, everything. What the -hell- am I going to do? I was told over the phone if it's simple, and a matter of reseating the space bar, it could be an overnight job. Otherwise a whole new top plate (integrated keyboard, trackpad, top, etc) needs to be replaced. The part would need ordering, therefore the wait. *sigh* how am I going to play with photobooth?:
I currently use a cheap logitech USB headset for chatting in skype on my Macbook Pro or iMac, it's wired, and a bit clunky. I've been meaning to do something about this and go for some kind of wireless solution. I'm going to kill two birds with one stone, and get myself a bluetooth over-ear earpiece. I've settled on the Plantronics Voyager 510, after reading a few blogs and sites on success with pairing on a mac and using the unit as a general audio in/out device. This is good news. I've also heard good things on the quality of audio, which is important.
How am I killing two birds with one stone? Well I can use it for skype/ichat/whatever on my mac, and also for my mobile phone. I've never been a fan of the 'look' of having one of these things attached to my head, and I promise not to walk around -everywhere- with it on mine... I'll see how I go and will report back with my luck when the unit arrives (it's on order).
