PS3 and AppleTV friendly files
I've been recording TV shows lately, and encoding them to suit various media players including PS3 and AppleTV. I wrote a blurb here on cinemamac.com check it out.

It's been a while since I've made a post, so I figured what the hell, lets throw something together. My little girl is four and a half months old this week, she's growing so fast and learning all the time, it's really amazing to watch her as she talks, dribbles, puts things in her mouth and does all those neat baby things. Keeeeep on learning! I picked up an iPhone 3G on the day of release here in Australia. It's a long and funny story that I won't go into. Lets just say I queued, only one phone arrived at the store I was at, and I somehow managed to score that single delivered phone. I've configured this site with a plugin that re-formats how it all looks when you browse it on your iPhone or iPod Touch. It's just totally cool. I'm loving the iPhone so far, it's really given me the technology to do remote system administration and other things.. way cool. thumbs up. Battery life sucks however. But you get that (charge every night just about) All you AppleTV people, I need to get you visiting cinemamac.com instead of here.. (a new dedicated site).. perhaps I'll redirect all the links in this site to point at cinemamac.com hehe James
I hacked a friends Apple TV not long ago, a version 1.1 It was going great for a while until it was accidentally updated by the wifey... damn. So I spent half of yesterday hacking their v2.02 unit. it's getting a little more complex as Apple works to prevent people from hacking them. I applied much the same technique as I did for my v2 ATV however a little more tweaking was required to get USB working correctly. In the end after applying my own knowledge to the hack. I ended up using a neat little util that someone has put together to make it just really easy to enable USB.. check it out here

I've been blogging about the AppleTV a fair bit since I bought one. There's a lot of information on this site on the subject, however, I've decided to move the posts and articles to another of my sites.... www.cinemamac.com So go get your AppleTV fix over there from now on.. okay? great! :)

Since updating to ATV 2.0 and re-hacking (see, ATVfiles and NitoTV). I've been having a few minor issues. The biggest issue at the moment is sometimes when using ATVfiles to navigate and play my movies, I loose the sound. A reboot of the ATV is required to get the sound working again. Strange! If anyone has experienced something like this, let me know. In the meantime I guess I'll go check the wiki over at http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/

Brandon Holland has been cranking out some great plugins lately, including the excellent Skype Plugin. Now he's at it again with a great Safari webkit plugin, check it out!

Well Apple have officially released their latest update to the AppleTV dubbed "Take 2". This update brings a heap of new features and an updated user interface. Of the new features we can expect movie rentals, and... my favourite, the ability to now use the AppleTV as an airtunes device from your Mac using iTunes (cool). Of course, if your in Australia, you won't get movie rentals, infact the AU Apple website doesn't really show anything new at all. We don't even have the guided tour: http://www.apple.com/appletv/guidedtour/ Compare the AU and US ATV sites: http://www.apple.com/appletv/ http://www.apple.com/au/appletv/ WHEN Apple, WHEN will we get Movies and TV shows from iTunes, and rentals? sheesh! The AppleTV hacker community is already buzzing with the new software update, with enthusiasts already cracking the update open to have a look inside at the new changes. Some of the questions floating around include "will my plugins still work?, what about my external hard disk?" etc. I strongly advise that you do not update if you have "enhanced" your ATV with plugins and hacks until further notice, please keep your eyes peeled to www.awkwardtv.org more on this subject soon!
Well it's done, and done properly. You know it was actually me that got Skype running on the AppleTV originally. Well Brandon Holland has done the hard work and integrated it nicely into the AppleTV frontrow as a plugin. He's also working on a really tidy Safari plugin Check it out: http://www.brandon-holland.com/skypeplugin.html

Steve's Macworld 08 keynote is over, he's announced a pile of stuff, but of most importance to the AppleTV lovers out there, is the release of a software update for AppleTV due in Feb. The interface looks new, the ATV will be able to buy or rent content directly from iTunes store without a computer. Standalone ATV? With this news I expect to see some concerned ATV hackers. Will this new software update work on my hacked ATV, will it remove my hacks? Will I be able to re-hack the ATV once it's upgraded? is this version 1.2? so many questions! I know I'm concerned! On the bright side there will be DVD and HD (720p) with Dolby 5.1 movie playback/rentals. (highly unlikely we will see rentals in Australia, we cant even buy tv shows or movies through iTunes yet!) I'll be adding more information as I get it from macworld punters!
There's been a lot of rumours (or should I say hope?) that Apple might release an updated Apple TV at Macworld 08 (as well as ultra portable laptops, new cinema displays, etc, etc). Do you really think Apple will release an updated Apple TV? I dont.
